- Prepare 1 cup Whole black lentils/saboot urad dal

- Prepare 1 tsp turmeric powder/haldi
- Take 1 tsp red chilli powder/lal mirch powder

- Make ready 1 pinch hing /asafoetida
- Make ready 2 tsp coriander powder/dhania powder
- Prepare 1 tsp dry mango powder/amchur
- Take to taste salt
Steps to make Kaali Dal Maa ki dal:
- Wash dal 3-4 times and soak in sufficient water for 4-5 hrs or you can soak overnight.
- Transfer the soaked dal to pressure cooker add turmeric powder,sliced onions,salt,2 Tbsp of mustard oil and enough water(6-7 cups)to the dal.
- Cook in pressure cooker for 5-6 whistle or 20-25 minutes.Make sure you put enough water in a dal,else dal can burn in the pressure cooker.
- When cooked set aside,and let the cooker pressure release naturally.
- Puree the tomatoes along with garlic cloves and set aside for later use.
- Heat oil in a pan add tej patta,black cardamom,cloves to hot oil and saute for a minute.
- Add cumin seeds, cook for few seconds when seeds start to sizzle add chopped ginger and cook for few more seconds.
- Now add chopped onions and cook until onions turns translucent in colour.
- When onions are done add coriander powder,red chilli powder and amchur powder to cooked onions.Stir for a minute make sure do not burn the spices.
- Add tomato puree,salt to onion spice mixture and mix well.
- Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes on medium flame or until oil starts oozing from the sides,stir in between otherwise your masala will get burnt.
- On other side of gas stove place cooked dal cooker on low -medium heat uncovered.
- When tomato onion masala is prepared add mixture to black dal and mix well.
- Let the dal cook uncovered on low flame for about 30 minutes or till it reaches the desired consistency.Stir in between.
- Dal can be thin or thick adjust consistency as per your prefrence.
- Once done turn off the heat and serve hot with missi roti,plain roti or rice.
