- Make ready 300 gm Puffed rice
- Take 1/2 cup Oil
- Prepare 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- Get 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- Get 1/4 tsp Asafoetida
- Get 2 stalks Curry leaves
- Make ready 5 Whole red chillies - broken in half
- Take 1/2 cup Roasted split chana
- Take 1/2 cup Peanuts/Almonds
- Get 15 cloves Garlic - crushed with skin
- Take 1 tsp Red chilli powder
- Take 3/4 tsp Salt
- Make ready 1 tbsp Sugar OR
- Get 2 tsp Sugar powder
Instructions to make Spicy Puffed Rice | Murmura Chivda | Khara Mandakki:
- In a small kadai, heat oil on medium flame. Add mustard seeds & cumin seeds. Allow to splutter. Lowder the heat and add curry leaves, whole red chillies & asafoetida.
- Add the roasted split chana and almonds. Traditional recipe is made uusing peanuts. Due to dietary constraints of my family, I substitute it with almonds. You may chose either one of them.
- Saute until fried gram is slightly golden brown and almonds start swelling and cracking up slightly.
- Turn off heat. Add the crushed garlic. Heat of the oil is enough to cook the garlic.
- Add red chilli powder. Mix well.
- Pour the seasoning over the puffed rice. Add salt & sugar.
- Mix well on low heat so that the puffed rice becomes crispy & crunchy. Check the spices and adjust according to your taste.
